MOVE OVER, MADAME BUTTERFLY!

news imageA gloriously dotty and colourful comic opera that is astounding audiences on its UK tour comes to challenge music and theatre lovers of Pembrokeshire this week [Saturday 12 July] when it visits Milford Haven’s Torch Theatre.

If you’ve always been put off by the idea that opera is ‘stuffy’, but you’re still curious to experience one, then this is most definitely the show to go to. It certainly has a strange, but utterly bewitching storyline.

A love story between a film director, his chair and his faithful, but very jealous, dog - yes, we did say a dog….. A Chair in Love has all the charm of a romantic fairytale, yet with an element of light-hearted ‘cartoon’ about the characters, reflected in the delightful costumes. Unexpectedly, the musicians also play a part in the performance, wandering around the stage, becoming involved in all the action. The chair? Well, suffice to say, it’s very un-co-operative – especially when it comes to being sat on!

A co-production between Taliesin Arts Centre and Le Chien qui chante of Montreal, Canada - where the show premieres after its UK tour - this new opera has its roots in a remarkable story which began many years ago when the writer was inspired by a film animation he saw in Canada when he was just 10 years old and called The Chairy Tale.

Not exactly Madame Butterfly? – you bet! The off the wall humour of A Chair in Love will help to clear some opera cobwebs and provide some zany fun along the way.

A charming and irreverent operatic romp which borrows elements from the worlds of film animation, musicals and the theatre of the absurd - A Chair in Love is, without doubt,a hugely entertaining piece of musical theatre with a universal appeal which will refresh, entertain and inspire anyone from the age of 7 to 70!

A Chair in Love (sung in English) can be seen at the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven on Saturday 12 July. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Theatre Box Office on 01646 695267, or reservation requests made through their website at www.torchtheatre.co.uk. Go on, you know you want to!
