| brief history hanes cryno |
WID was formed in 1991 by a small group of independent dance artists with the view to support collective training needs and to discuss and address key issues that faced the dance sector in Wales at that time. A major part of WID’s history was the development of the Welsh Independent Dance Festival, which took place at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff between 1993 and 1997. The bi-annual festivals included the work of up to thirty international and Wales based individuals and companies spanning over a ten day period. The festivals were promoted and organised by the voluntary executive committee headed by Belinda Neave. During 1998, WID became a revenue client of the Arts Council of Wales, established its board of directors and appointed its first full-time member of staff. New initiatives and services were introduced to encourage and nurture the development of Wales based dance artists, and office and rehearsal spaces were secured within its based at Chapter Arts Centre. |

WID’s steady growth has enabled the organisation to continuously introduce new and innovative projects as well as develop its existing annual programmes. The organisation’s future goals include developing more international partnerships, broadening its activities and support to artists living in all areas of Wales, commissioning the work of international choreographers on a bi-annual, providing regular class provision throughout Wales and securing its own building with rehearsal and performance spaces and office facilities. |
